Solar Cooking: Harness the Power of the Sun
chris lamb • May 17, 2023

Traditional kitchen appliances like ovens, microwaves, and toasters rely on electricity to cook food.

Solar ovens offer an eco-friendly alternative that uses the sun's energy for cooking, making them perfect for power outages or eco-conscious meals.

Solar ovens capture the sun's heat and can be made from various materials, ranging from professional-grade structures to DIY recycled boxes.

Box cookers are popular due to their insulation, reflectivity, and glazing, which help collect and amplify the sun's heat.

Here is a DIY solar cooker & some delicious recipes to try.

Materials:

  • Pizza box
  • Newspapers
  • Black construction paper

Instructions:

  1.  Trace a square on the pizza box lid, leaving a 1-inch border. Cut three sides of the square, leaving the hinge side uncut.
  2. Lift the cut portion to create a flap. Line the flap's underside with aluminum foil and secure with tape.
  3. Line the pizza box's interior with black construction paper. Stuff the box's edges with newspapers for insulation.
  4. Cover the cut opening in the lid with plastic wrap, ensuring it's tightly sealed.
  5. Your solar cooker is ready to use!

Solar Oven Cooking Tips

Solar ovens can reach temperatures between 200°F and 300°F, making them suitable for slow cooking and baking. Position your cooker in direct sunlight, and aim for cooking between 11:00 am and 3:00 pm.

Allow for longer cooking times compared to conventional ovens and use a thermometer to ensure food is cooked thoroughly.
